Thankful

 

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV

            To give thanks in all circumstances requires that in every circumstance we have something about which to give thanks. Further it must be so worthy an object that no matter how bleak the circumstances their dark shadow is overcome by the brilliant light of goodness. We must have then something in our hearts unchanging, and unchangeable greater than the whole sum of our troubles real and imagined, a sure hope and a steadfast joy: such as can grant us profound peace and fill our whole being with gratitude. God alone can satisfy this want, and we see in His command here His great wish to give such satisfaction to us all. It is good and right.

Prayer

            Our Father fix Yourself in our hearts, and make Yourself known therein so that we might have a cause to be thankful in every season of life. May it be so to Your glory. In Christ’s name. amen.

Revival and reactions

  And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”   But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” Acts 2:12-13 ESV             The power of God the Holy Spirit has been the sufficient provision of the Church in all of its works, and the One behind all its victories even from the day of Pentecost. And from that very day there have been mixed reaction to each outpouring of the Spirit. In the centuries following Pentecost even the Church has been divided in its response to what we might call revivals.             As we see in Acts 2 the masses must take note. Do not overlook this point, for what we find in it is a wonder which the world cannot reproduce or easily explain. You see something beyond this world has broken into the midst of the world in a spectacular way. God has manifested Himself amongst His people powerfully drawing attention back to Himself.   Let us consider that prior to this event the Church seemed fairly irrelevant. J

Against work addiction

  It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Psalm 127:2 ESV             When work becomes anxious toil, something has gone wrong. Something has gone wrong in our society when it comes to work. Several decades ago, Wayne Oats coined a new word, “Workaholic” to describe addiction to work.   The description Oats came up resonates with the psalmist describes. Anxious toiling, long hours, and little if any enjoyment of the work itself or the fruits of the toil. Addiction is another word for slavery, and it is easy to be enslaved by the anxiety over our work for it drives to work more, and that increases our anxiety while also burning through psychological energies.             Not only is workaholism addiction/slavery, it is idolatry for if we stop to think about it the workaholic has placed his hope in his own work.
