The good deposit

By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:14 ESV                 It was Paul who entrusted Timothy with the good deposit, which Paul received from Christ and was affirmed in by the other apostles. As we learn in the next chapter Timothy is to entrust the deposit to other men who will hand it on to other men. This has now gone on for some two-thousand years, till today the deposit has come into our hands.                 This is the good deposit, firstly the holy scriptures which are our ultimate authority, and then the wisdom of the true saints throughout the history of the Church which helps us to understand and apply God’s word. Just as Paul left Timothy not only with the writings that we still possess, but also with verbal instruction, and an example of faithful living so to the writings and examples from our history are given for our good. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can discern what belongs to the good deposit,

Perfect love

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him 1 John 4:16 ESV                 God is love, He gives the word its definition for His love alone is perfect. The love of God is continual, and continually displayed in all His actions. God never ceases to love His people those who know Him and are known by Him. His love for His own is so great that Father sent the Son to redeem us, and both Father and Son have sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. This we believe and so we believe in the unfailing, unending, unfathomable love of God.             And more we who have received Christ by grace through faith abide in this love. It is ministered to us by the Holy Spirit through many means which God established to the very purpose. When He blesses us, we receive His love, when He draws near to us, we receive His love, when He disciplines, we receive His love, when He bids draw near to Hi

The thunder of God's pwoer

“Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways,   and how small a whisper do we hear of him!   But the thunder of his power who can understand?” Job 26:14 ESV             Job has recounted several wonders which God has wrought, deeds great and mighty beyond all human capacity; yet he says it is the fringes of what God might do. Our God is powerful beyond comprehension. The showing forth of its fullness would undo us.             Still the outskirts of His power are revealed to us today, but we with our science see more the mechanism then the One behind it. We have lost more then we have gained if the elegance of the mechanism leads us to complacency rather than awe. If the study of God’s work makes us remark on our own powers rather than His we have gone wrong. What we might know of what He has done should lead us towards Him.             What use is there in running from Him? And why should not we run towards Him? By His power He has extended grace to all who will believe.
