The Way-maker

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.”  Revelation 3:7 ESV

The church at Philadelphia has but a little power, and are harassed, but they have held fast and not denied their Lord. The way before them must have seemed closed off, and progress impossible.  Their Lord addressed them as He who can open the way, and keep it open.

Long suffering is then a virtue rewarded. “Proceed as the way opens” says the Quaker proverb, and for believers it may be right for we know who opens the way. And we know this by His self-revelation, that He can open the way. None will keep Him from clearing the path ahead, and none will be able to close it again till He allows.

Let us not loose heart then beloved when there seems no way, the way will appear as He wills. Let us not forsake Him then though our strength wane, and we be hard pressed we are not crushed. If the door is closed do be quick to look for window. The God who made a way from death in sin to life in grace can be trusted.

Prayer

Father may we proceed as You open the way. May those of our brothers and sisters who are truly hard pressed, and holding fast find You have opened a way for them even now. We ask for the sake of Your glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
