He also serves...

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Psalm 27:14 ESV

There was once a young man who felt a call to ministry. He completed seminary, and began looking for a place of service, while working on a farm. Days turned to weeks, and weeks to months, and months added up to a year and more. The young man prayed each day for a chance to serve the Church. One day while praying with particular fervor as he fed the chickens, he sensed God gave this answer, “Be quiet and feed the chickens.”

Times often seem more desperate than they are, and desperate times seem to require desperate measures. We want to act for the sake of action, to move for the sake of movement. We want the trouble to be past. We think to stand and wait, to do the mundane things which God requires of us today is somehow sinful; but the opposite is true.

To reassign ourselves, to reject God’s timing, and His plans, to think feeding chickens, or leading our families, or simply waiting on the Lord is disservice that is the sinful course. God has not changed, and so the situation is never desperate, it is never out of control, and it never warrants cutting biblical corners. The one who takes up the Sword of the Spirit rightly and well takes it up where God has planted him, and moves only when commanded.

Prayer

Father may we be content to wait on You standing strong where we are assigned. To Your glory, in Christ’s name. Amen.
