But Moses said to the LORD, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Then the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” Exodus 4:10-12 ESV

Moses is an unlikely candidate, and he knows it well. Here he sites his lack of ability as a reason God should send another. And from a human standpoint it makes sense. However, from the standpoint of truth it makes absolutely no sense. It makes no sense because God is involved, and He is so incredibly strong that He can prevail through the weakness of his chosen servants.

It is one thing to be humble, Paul can call himself the least of all apostles, and even the chief of sinners; but Paul still speaks boldly in the ministry God called him to. There is a line between humility and doubt that is often hard to see. The critical point is this, God can and will do what He wills to do through whomever He wills to use. When God says go, you go. You go not in confidence that you can do anything, but that God certainly can.

This is not to say we shouldn’t apply ourselves to improve our abilities. It does not mean study is obsolete. It means simply at the end of study, when the time for training has passed, and we still find the task too great for us we can still undertake it for nothing is difficult for our God.

Prayer

Our Father whatever you call us to let us be humble in understanding our inability apart from You, and yet bold and courageous knowing Your unrivalled ability. Whatever we do be glorified in it, for apart from You we can do nothing. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
