When flesh and heart fail

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 ESV

There is much that might break us down internally and externally. Asaph saw the apparent injustice of the world where wicked souls seem to prosper while those, like Asaph himself, who try to do right never seem to progress. Trying to understand it in human terms is an impossible task as the writer says. Trying to understand much of suffering can be a never-ending unfulfilling venture. It can lead us to despondency and despair.

There is no guarantee in this life that flesh and heart won’t fail. These things are going to happen. What is guaranteed is that where we fail God will not. When our hearts let go, He will hold us fast. This is wonderful news for those who cannot feel that is wonderful news. To the heart whose love is cold, to the flesh that has gone numb, to the soul that cannot bring itself to care right now endure. There came a day for Asaph when he could write this song. Trust in God, seek Him where He can be found. A better day will come.

Prayer

Father help us. In Christ’s name. Amen.

Songs

Abide with me

From the depth of woe

He will hold me fast
